This article summarises the results of a survey into the present and future effects of environmental liability issues on banking practices. It reports on the banks environmental awareness; credit risk management; remediation costs; and perceptions of future developments. It concludes that banks see environmental issues as a challenge rather than as a threat; environmental considerations play an increasing role in risk assessment; the banking world seeks clearer rules; the banks are probably more conscious of environmental issues than might appear; and that they believe they will become more important.
