This article deals with the applicability of the precautionary principle on Carbon Capture and Storage, the envisaged risks that can occur by the injection of Carbon Dioxide underground. The issue of applying Environmental Impact Assessment to determine the safety of storage sites, and the advantages of using the Strategic Environmental Assessment to determine how environmental impacts resulting from the operation and maintenance of a CO2 transport and storage system can be minimised and controlled, if adequately dealt with.
