Abstract: This article presents the first results of a research into the applications of a vague notion to which contemporary Chinese law has been making widespread recourse: the notion of heli, usually translated into English as ‘reasonable’. The author analyses it in statutory law, judicial interpretations, and linguistic uses in a ‘law and language’ perspective.
