Abstract

Although the risk of contagion from an Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) sovereign country default to the European private banking sector should not be overestimated, recent proposals calling for the setting up of a European Monetary Fund still are worthwhile considering. This should be done, however, through the enhanced cooperation procedure – a procedure that, so far, has never been followed.
