Unbalanced variable compensation in the financial sector is said to have led to undesirable behaviour ranging from excessive risk taking to an over-emphasis on short-term results. Both in The Netherlands and on the EU level, there are several initiatives on variable remuneration of executive board members. Unfortunately, the rules laid down therein are not always clear-cut and differ from each other.
