This article is a summary of the Third Winnie Whittaker Memorial Lecture presented to the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (East Asia Branch) at the Hong Kong Club by Colin J Wall, a Past President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, on 15 May 2008. The subject of the lecture was the 'Alabama Claims' arbitration held in Geneva in 1871-1872, an important precedent for the peaceful resolution of international disputes by arbitration
