The long-awaited decision of the conjoined UK and German cases of Stringer v. HMRC and Schultz-Hoff v. Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund respectively were handed down by the European Court of Justice (‘ECJ’) on 20 January 2009. These cases raised two key issues that have, for a long time, caused problems for employers.
